The 2014 Kaz Collins School of the Air Photo Competition will kick off at the beginning of July, encouraging kids living in the outback of WA to take photos of ‘colour in the rangelands’.
The competition, run by Rangelands NRM, is now in its fourth year and aims to engage with children and their families living in the outback of WA.
The five schools in WA that participate in the photo competition are Carnarvon, Kalgoorlie, Meekatharra, Kimberley and Port Hedland Schools of the Air.
Rangelands NRM Communications Manager Teresa Belcher said the competition aims to raise awareness of natural resource management for kids and their families living in regional WA.
“We want to involve our next generation of land managers in having pride in our rangelands landscapes and our regional communities,” she said.
“This year we are proud to announce we have some generous sponsors to support the 2014 competition: Gold Sponsors – Gaia Resources and ChemCentre, Silver Sponsor – Pilbara Mesquite Management Committee, and Bronze Sponsors – Swish Design and Scitech,” Ms Belcher said.
Entries are split into three age categories – lower primary (kindy, years 1 and 2), middle primary (years 3, 4, 5), upper primary (years 6 and 7). There prize for the overall winner is a digital camera worth $500.
The 2013 competition winner was Eric, a Year 2 student from the Kimberley School of the Air with his photo ‘Dingo Freedom’.
“It was so good when I found out that I won. I was surprised and the camera is awesome! I’ve always wanted a camera as good as that for taking pictures of wild animals,” Eric said.
Prizes are also presented to the overall runner up, and each age category is awarded a 1st, 2nd and 3rd prize. In addition, all kids receive a certificate and a small gift for entering the competition.
The photos of winners and finalists will feature in the Rangelands NRM annual report, website, ‘Rangelands Roundup’ magazine and the 2015 Rangelands NRM Calendar.
Getting involved – sponsorship
In 2014, we are again seeking organisations to sponsor our competition. By getting involved you will be raising your profile and brand in the rangelands region. The competition is promoted in local, regional and SOTA media, and in our Rangelands NRM media (website, eNews, magazine and social media) and publications. Contact Teresa Belcher by email or telephone 08 9468 8253 for more information.
The Western Australia’s ‘School of the Air’ network covers 85 per cent of the state, providing vital education support to 200 of some of our country’s most remote and isolated children.
In July 2012, we lost our Landcare Facilitator Kaz Collins in a tragic accident. Kaz was instrumental in setting up the first SOTA Photo Competition. Kaz epitomised the rangelands sprit and is greatly missed. This competition is an ongoing event in memory of Kaz and her contribution to the rangelands.
