The declaration ceremony for the Birriliburu Indigenous Protected Area will take place on Tuesday 23 April 2013 at Milyinirri (Well 6 on the Canning Stock Route).
The ceremony will be run by Mungarlu Ngurraranktja Rirraunkaja Aboriginal Corporation (MNR), the Registered Native Title Body Corporate (RNTBC) that holds the native title rights and interests over the Birriliburu native title determined area on behalf of the Birriliburu native title holders.
MNR’s decision to declare an Indigenous Protected Area (IPA) follows the recognition of native title rights and interests of the Birriliburu native title holders in June 2008 (WAD 6284 of 1998) and a range of on-ground natural and cultural resource management projects and activities over subsequent years. These highly successful projects and activities have seen a number of productive partnerships established between the Birriliburu native title holders, state and commonwealth agencies and non-government agencies to support the Birriliburu native holders to look after their country and to create much needed opportunities for training and employment.
These on-ground projects and activities have informed the development of the Birriliburu Indigenous Protected Area Plan for Country by MNR. This plan sets the framework for the way that the Birriliburu native title holders intend to look after their country for the benefit of current and future generations of Birriliburu and the wider Western Australian community.
