Kaz Collins School of the Air Photo Competition

The 2016 Competition is now open

We are pleased to annonce the offical opening of the 2016 Kaz Collins School of the Air Photo Competition.

Each spring, Rangelands NRM WA runs its annual photo competition for children living in the rangelands. In the past five years, more than 130 individual students have taken part and submitted over 800 photos to the competition! This is a great opportunity to get our kids (the future land managers of the rangelands) more conscious of biodiversity and land management in their local area.

This year, the competition is themed ‘Working in the rangelands’. That may be interpreted in different ways, as work can be many things, from mustering cattle and working on a pastoral station to land management and protecting our native plants and animals, by controlling weeds, feral animals and managing fire.

There are still the same categories for the prizes an overall 1st prize winner, an overall 2nd prize, and for each age level (lower, middle and upper primary), a 1st, 2nd and 3rd prize. All entries will receive a certificate and a small gift.

The closing date of the 2016 Competition is COB Friday 14 October 2016.

The competition, which started in 2011, aims to engage with children and their families living in the outback of WA to raise their awareness of natural resource management and further involve our next generation of land managers in having pride in our rangelands landscapes and our regional communities.

The competition is split into the following age categories – early primary (Kindy, years 1 and 2), middle primary (years 3,4,5), upper primary (years 6 and 7). There is a prize for an overall winner and a runner up, and each age category is also awarded a 1st, 2nd and 3rd prize. In addition, all kids receive a certificate and a small gift for entering the competition.   Eric, winner of the 2013 competition

The Western Australia’s School of the Air network covers 85 per cent of the state, providing vital education support to 200 of some of our country’s most remote and isolated children. The boundaries of five Schools of the Air in WA correspond with the Rangelands NRM region. Participating schools were Carnarvon, Kalgoorlie, Meekatharra, Kimberley and Port Hedland Schools of the Air.

Kaz Collins

In 2011, our Landcare Facilitator Kaz Collins initiated the Rangelands NRM School of the Air (SOTA) photo competition. In July 2012, we lost Kaz in a tragic accident. Kaz was instrumental in setting up the first SOTA Photo Competition. Kaz epitomised the rangelands spirit and is greatly missed. This competition is an ongoing event in memory of Kaz and her contribution to the rangelands.
