New native plant guide for the Goldfields promotes bushland conservation

[June 2015]

The Kalgoorlie Urban Landcare Group (KBULG) has published a new native plant guide, with a particular emphasis on those found in Karlkurla Bushland Park, one of the six vegetation regeneration zones established around the city.

Development of the guide was supported by Rangelands NRM and involved many years of botanical research and working experience in Karlkurla Bushland Park and the Goldfields.

The new guide is the second edition of the Native Plant Guide for Karlkurla Bushland Park & the Goldfields of Western Australia, originally published in 2003.

Rangelands NRM Program Manager, Southern Rangelands, Jane Bradley said the updated guide, launched at Boulder Market Day on Sunday, 21 June 2015, aimed to increase awareness and knowledge of native and threatened species in the Goldfields.

“The new edition contains updated species information and images as well as a wider range of plant species native to the Goldfields,” she said.

KBULG is a community-based not-for-profit organisation working with the public to conserve and improve the natural environment in and around Kalgoorlie Boulder.

KBULG CEO Kim Eckert said the organisation aims to protect and to enhance native bushlands and urban spaces in order to conserve biodiversity while enhancing the lifestyle and recreational opportunities for the community.

“This native plant guide is a must-have for local plant enthusiasts. It provides high-quality images to make plant identification easy and detailed information about species phenology, species habitat and traditional anthropogenic uses, along with other interesting facts rarely mentioned in conventional guidebooks,” she said.

Copies of the guide can be ordered directly from KBULG (www.kbulg.org.au) or purchased from visitor centres in the Goldfields.
