New ranger partnership in the Pilbara

Rangelands NRM are partnering with the Juluwarlu Aboriginal Corporation to jointly fund a position and Ranger activities with Rio Tinto in the Pilbara.

Marc McDonald has been appointed as the Yindjibarndi Cultural Heritage and Conservation Manager. Marc was previously a ranger with the Department of Environment and Conservation at Millstream National Park.

For the past couple of years, Juluwarlu Aboriginal Corporation has sponsored the Ngurawaana Community in the development of a Rangelands NRM (natural resource management) funded ranger team to work on the Lower Fortescue.

“The focus of the work has been managing the parkinsonia which has infested large sections of the river banks below the Millstream National Park,” Bill Cotching, Rangelands NRM Program Manager – Pilbara said.

Initially, Marc will be working with the rangers on local weed management activities. Marc and Bill will also identify and progress opportunities to co-ordinate and source funding for NRM activities and training in Yindjibarndi country.

“We hope that these activities will engage other Yindjibarndi Community members in realising their aspirations to look after country,” Bill Cotching said.
