Rangelands NRM are pleased to announce the winners of the 2012 Kaz Collins School of the Air Photo Competition.
The overall first prize of a digital SLR camera goes to Jessica (Year 6) from Kalgoorlie School of the Air. Jessica’s image ‘Under the Eucla Jetty’with the sun’s reflection impressed all of the judges.
Runner up was Matilda, a pre-primary student from Meekatharra School of the Air. Matilda’s photo ‘Amazing wildlife in the desert’ captures birds taking flight. She will receive a telescope kit.
The competition, which started in 2011 invites children living in the bush to submit photos of their ‘country’.
Children from all five School of the Airs (Kalgoorlie, Meekatharra, Carnarvon, Port Hedland and Kimberley) took part.
Rangelands NRM Communications Manager, Teresa Belcher said the competition attracted 130 photos from 46 individual students.
“There were some great photos from all age groups and there are clearly a lot of talented photographers out there,” Ms Belcher said.
The competition awarded a first and second overall prize and a first, second and third for the age groups Lower Primary (Kindy, Pre-Primary, Years 1 and 2), Middle Primary (Years 3, 4 and 5) and Upper Primary (Years 6 and 7).
“We’ve got some fabulous prizes including a digital camera, a telescope and various environmental and science kits and books from our sponsors Scitech, Creata Direct Learning and Australian Geographic,” Ms Belcher said.
Dr Brian Warren, General Manager of Rangelands NRM said the photo competition was the idea of Rangelands NRM Landcare Coordinator Kaz Collins who was tragically killed in a car accident in July of this year.
“Kaz was greatly respected throughout the rangelands and with the support of her family, we are aiming to make the competition an ongoing event in memory of Kaz and her contribution to the rangelands.”
All winning photos can be viewed on the Rangelands website.
